Anyone Can Crochet - Baby Booties

 Anyone Can Crochet:

New Born Series:

Baby Booties / Baby shoes:

My interest (love) to crochet for new born babies started with my first child. Cute little baby booties are the first crocheted wearable I made for my son before his birth. As we didn't know the gender, I made it with a multicoloured yarn. After his birth, I had made him some more couple of things which he loved to wear like sweater, shawl, beanie etc. Now let me start the new born series of crochets with baby booties which are so much adorable when worn by the kids. It makes me very happy when my kids wear things made by me. This series is only for the new born babies. I shall share the methods and patterns of other similar stuffs for grown ups and adults in separate posts. Let us get started with the method and pattern of the new born baby booties.

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn : Pink colour acrylic yarn
  • Hook : 3 mm size
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Method:

  • Take the desired colour yarn of your choice.
  • Make a slip knot. Basics of crochet like making slip knot, chaining up stitches are already given in previous posts. Please check them out or click here.
  • Then make 13 chain stitches.
  • Leave out the first three chain stitches from the hook.
  • Start making two double crochets in the fourth stitch from the hook.

Double Crochet:

  1. To do a double crochet (dc), the active loop will be in the hook.
  2. Insert the hook into the stitch in which double crochet has to be made.
  3. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Now there will be three loops in the hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. Now there will be again three loops in hook.
  5. Yarn over again and now pull through all the three loops.
  6. This is one double crochet.
  • Back to the method, it should be made three double crochets in the first chain.
  • Three chain made initially makes one double crochet and hence we make two double crochets.
  • Then make one double crochet in each chain stitches for eight chains.
  • In the next chain, we have to make six double crochets.
  • After that, we start working on the opposite side of the chain, in which we have to make one double crochets in next eight stitches.
  • At the end chain, make another three double crochets in the same stitch.
  • Then make a slip stitch with the third chain we left out initially.
  • Then chain up three stitches.
  • Make a double crochet in the same stitch in which we made the 3 chains.
  • Now make two double crochets in the next two stitches.
  • After that make one double crochet in the next eight stitches.
  • Then make two double crochets in the next six stitches.
  • One double crochet in the next eight stitches.
  • Now make two double crochets in the next three stitches.
  • Then slip stitch in the third chain.
  • Make three chains and now we work only in the back loops of the chain.
  • Make one double crochet in each stitch across only in the back loops.
  • This gives a nice unique look for the booties.
  • At the end, make a slip stitch with the third column.
  • Make three chains and do one double crochet in the next nine stitches.
  • Then we do a decrease stitch called double crochet two together abbreviated as dc2tog.
  • This is a kind of stitch making double crochet in two stitches together at a time.

Dc2tog:

  1. To do a dc2tog, there will be an active loop in the hook.
  2. Yarn over and insert into the first stitch and pull through the stitch.
  3. There will be three loops in the hook.
  4. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops. Now there will be two loops in the the hook.
  5. Yarn over and insert into the second stitch.
  6. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Now there will be four loops in the hook.
  7. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops. There will will be three loops in the hook.
  8. Yarn over once again and pull through all the three loops.
  9. This is one dc2tog which is used to merge two stitches together using double crochet.
  • Back to the method of booties making, make dc2tog ten times, which means in the next 20 stitches.
  • Then do one double crochet in the next ten stitches.
  • At the end, slip stitch with the third chain.
  • Now make 3 chains and do one double crochet in the next nine stitches.
  • Then make dc2tog five times in the next ten stitches.
  • At the end, slip stitch with the third chain.
  • Finally, chain one and make one single crochet (sc) in all the stitches across to give the booties a neat look.
  • Slip stitch with the chain one made.
  • Make the end knot and fasten off the yarn.
  • Weave in the loose ends with yarn needle or the hook.
  • Now cute, beautiful baby booties are made 😊
