Anyone can Crochet - Single Crochet

Anyone can Crochet:

Single Crochet:

Single crochet is the next basic stitch in crochet. Single crochet is generally abbreviated as sc in the written patterns of crochet projects. Let us check out how to do single crochet.

  • Before starting anything in crochet, we begin with a slip knot and make chain stitches.
  • Basics about crochet like making a slip knot and chain stitches have been given in the previous post. Click here to see the basics of crochet post.
  • When we have made the chain stitches, there will be an active loop on the hook. Then we can start the single crochet.
  • The single crochet is usually made in the second chain from the hook.
  • The long end of the yarn will be in our left hand.

  • Insert the hook into the second chain. Grab the yarn with the hook and pull it through the chain stitch.
  • Now the hook will have two loops of yarn.
  • Wrap the yarn over the hook head and grab it.
  • Then, pull it through both the loop on the hook. This results in one active loop on the hook.
  • This makes the first single crochet.
  • Repeat the same steps of inserting the hook into the next chain stitch, grabbing the yarn and pulling through the chain resulting in 2 loops on the hook.
  • Then wrapping and grabbing the yarn in hook head and pulling through the two loops make the consecutive single crochets.
  • Make single crochets until the end of the chain stitches (to the very first chain made).
  • Now we have to start the second row with single crochet.

  • Make one more chain at the end and turn the complete work to the other side.
  • The one more chain made is generally a turning chain and servers as the first stitch of the row.
  • While turning the work, the back side is now the front side.
  • Now, we have to do single crochet stitches all the way long in the second row.
  • For this, we have to insert the hook under both the loops in the single crochets of the previous row.
  • Some patterns sometimes suggests to work on the front loops or back loops of the stitches. But generally, done under both the loops.
  • Now, make single crochets in all the stitches across the row until the end and make the turning chain and flip the entire work to the other side and continue.
  • When single crochets are done until the desired number of rows, we make the end knot
  • End knot is generally mentioned as 'fasten off', 'finish off' or 'tie off'.
  • End knot is made to prevent the project from unravelling when the project is finished.
  • Once the project is finished, there will be one active loop on the hook.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6 or 7 inches) behind.
  • Wrap the cut end of the yarn around the hook head and grab it.
  • Pull it through the active loop completely. Pull it tightly to ensure a good end knot.
  • Next step is to weave in the loose ends.
  • To weave in the loose ends, we use a yarn needle. Insert the loose end of the yarn into the needle.

  • Make some random stitches into the work. Then cut off the excess yarn.
  • This way we can easily weave off the loose ends at the starting of the work and at the end of the project.
I hope you liked this post about single crochet and have learnt some basics about it. In the following posts, we shall learn some more basic crochet stitches and do many projects. Try the basics and let me know in the comments.

I wish you all "Happy Creating"!!! 😊
